Né à Trento (Italie) et issu d’une famille de musiciens, Matteo Franceschini commence à étudier la composition avec son père puis obtient son diplôme de fin d’études au Conservatoire de Milan auprès d’Alessandro Solbiati. Il se perfectionne à l’Académie Santa Cecilia de Rome avec Azio Corghi, puis en France à l’Ircam, où il suit le cursus de composition et d’informatique musicale (2006-2008).
Il remporte de nombreux prix dans des concours internationaux et reçoit des commandes de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de la Scala, de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain, de la Wigmore Hall, de la Biennale de Venise, du Festival Mito, de l’Ircam-Centre Pompidou, de la Philharmonie de Paris, du Grand Théâtre de Provence, de l’Orchestre national d’Île-de-France, de l’Orchestre National de Belgique, de l’Opéra de Reims, de l’Opéra de Saint-Etienne, de l'Académie Philharmonique de Rome, et de plusieurs autres festivals.
Il a créé des performances, des opéras, des œuvres symphoniques, chorales et de musique de chambre, des bandes-son et des outils multimédias.
Lion d'Argent pour la Musique à La Biennale de Venise 2019, Lauréat de la Fondation Banque Populaire en 2018, “Fedora - Rolf Liebermann Prize for Opera 2014”, il a été nommé compositeur en résidence à l’Arcal de Paris, à l'Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, à l'Académie Philharmonique de Rome et à La Fondation Haydn. En 2011, il a reçu le titre de “Italian Affiliated Fellow in the Arts” (Musical Composition) par l'Académie Américaine de Rome.
En 2017, Franceschini a adopté TOVEL comme nom de scène. En tant que TOVEL, il désire approfondir la figure de l’auteur/interprète dans le but d’expérimenter un nouveau son « de l’intérieur » ; la composition mise en miroir avec une pratique instrumentale ouvre de nouvelles perspectives sur la conscience théâtrale du geste sonore. L’implication directe sur scène et le travail en contact étroit avec d’autres musiciens se présentent comme un véritable acte de création : transformer la partition en énergie sonore.
Depuis 2011, ses partitions sont publiées chez Casa Ricordi - Universal Music Publishing.

The direct involvement on stage and the work in close contact with other musicians are presented as a true act of creation: transforming the score into sound energy.
